BIWAICHI

Riding around the largest lake in Japan

OVERVIEW

"Biwaichi" is a cycling route that circles Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake. It is recognized as one of the nation's "National Cycling Routes," and it is so beloved that it has earned the title of a "Cyclist's Sanctuary." Completing the full loop spans approximately 190 kilometers, but even cycling along the lake's western side offers an enjoyable experience.

The lakeside is dotted with attractions such as Hikone Castle and the iconic torii gate that appears to float on the water. The official route is marked with a blue line, ensuring cyclists won’t lose their way, and many sections feature dedicated cycling paths.

Conveniently located just 10 minutes by train from Kyoto, the area is highly accessible. If you’re a cycling enthusiast, consider adding a Lake Biwa cycling adventure to your Kyoto travel itinerary!
