SHIMANAMI-KAIDO
Japan's most famous cycling route through a sea of islands
OVERVIEW
The Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan's most famous cycling routes.
It stretches approximately 70 kilometers, connecting Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture in western Japan.
The standout feature of this route is the series of bridges connecting the islands scattered across the Seto Inland Sea. Cyclists can enjoy breathtaking views of the renowned island-dotted seascape of the Seto Inland Sea, all while riding over these bridges.
As one of Japan's National Cycle Routes, officially recognized by the government, the Shimanami Kaido offers excellent support for cyclists. The entire route is marked with blue navigation lines, making it easy and reassuring for first-time visitors. On the islands, cyclists follow the blue lines on general roads, while on the bridges, there are dedicated bike and pedestrian paths.
Given the area's history as a hub for maritime transportation, ferries are conveniently available if you wish to take a break or exit the route partway through.

In this region, it’s a common sight for cyclists to board ferries with their bikes. If the climb toward a bridge feels too challenging, hopping on a ferry can be a fun and unique experience.
The Shimanami Kaido hosts an international cycling event that attracts riders from around 30 countries.
During the event, highways normally reserved for cars are closed to motor traffic, allowing cyclists to enjoy riding on wide, spacious roads.
